How can you genuinely be happy for others?

It's not always easy to be genuinely happy for someone when they have something you desire. Jealousy and envy can creep in, making it difficult to celebrate their success. However, it is possible to overcome these negative emotions and genuinely rejoice with others. Here are five ways to do just that:

1. Pray

One way to cultivate genuine happiness for others is through prayer. Take a moment to pray for the person who has what you want. Ask for blessings and continued success in their life. By shifting your focus from yourself to them, you can develop a heart of gratitude and joy.

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people - 1 Timothy 2:1

2. Understand that God is not a respecter of persons

Remember that God does not show favoritism. Just because someone else has what you desire does not mean that you are any less deserving. Trust in God's plan for your life and believe that He has something special in store for you. Embrace the truth that everyone's journey is unique, and your time will come.

Then Peter replied, “I see very clearly that God shows no favoritism. In every nation he accepts those who fear him and do what is right. --Acts 10:34-35

3. Know the full story - oftentimes there is a struggle before the blessing

It's essential to recognize that success often comes after a period of struggle and hard work. Behind every achievement, there is a story of perseverance and determination. When you understand the journey someone has taken to reach their goal, it becomes easier to genuinely celebrate their accomplishment.

But they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. --Isaiah 30:41

4. Be aware of your answered prayers

Reflect on your own life and acknowledge the prayers that have been answered. Recognize the blessings you have received and the goals you have achieved. By focusing on your own blessings, you can develop a mindset of gratitude and contentment, making it easier to be genuinely happy for others.

Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise — the fruit of lips that openly profess his name. --Hebrews 13:15

5. Celebrate with others

Finally, actively participate in celebrating the success of others. Attend their events, congratulate them, and show genuine excitement for their achievements. By actively engaging in their joy, you not only strengthen your relationship with them but also cultivate a spirit of happiness and positivity within yourself.

Remember, being genuinely happy for others is not only beneficial for them but also for your own well-being. It allows you to let go of negative emotions and embrace a mindset of gratitude and joy. So, the next time someone has what you want, try these five ways to genuinely celebrate their success and watch as your own happiness grows.

Each of us should please our neighbors for their good, to build them up. -- Romans 15:2

This is such an important topic, especially in the social media context. It’s so easy to compare your reality with someone’s highlight reel. I pray that God would open all of our eyes to be able to see just how deeply and uniquely loved we are by Him in the name of Jesus! 🙏🏿 💗

I love this post! This is so important esp in this age of social media. A lot of times these feelings arise because as people, we can be so focused on ourselves. However, when we focus on loving others, keep our eyes on Christ and all He has done for us, then we can overcome the spirit of jealousy. Well- written!
